Not Just a Monday In May: The Met Gala

The first Monday in May is reserved for fashion's biggest night: the Met Gala. The Met Gala brings together celebrities, models and the superstars of the world to benefit the Met, through donations and fashion. Ever since its first themed event in 1973, the annual gala brings looks honoring the various themes, from camp to celestial bodies, from honoring long legacies and honored designers.

Tonight's Theme: The Garden of Time

The theme of the exhibit is 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' which will pay homage to pieces of fashion that are too fragile to be worn again. The exhibition will have three main zones: Land, Sea, and Sky, representing the natural materials used to create innovative and sustainable designs. There are about 250 pieces in the collection. spanning over 400 years, drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection—including designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and more.

The dress code for the 2024 Met Gala will be “The Garden of Time.” The dress code is what most viewers at home will see, with many of our celebrity favorites sporting looks that honor this theme. The dress code takes inspiration from a short story of the same title, written by J.G. Ballard in 1962. We’re looking forward to the new designs, with predictions around the themes of nature, fresh bright colors and long gowns, beautiful headpieces and adornments, and ethereal beauty.

Quick History of the Gala

The Met Gala was established in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a fundraiser for the newly founded Costume Institute to mark the opening of its annual exhibit. From 1948 to 1971, the event was held at various Manhattan venues, including the Waldorf Astoria, Central Park, and the Rainbow Room. Over the years, the Gala has transformed into the spectacle we know it to be today, with a dedicated space at the Met and a costumed theme every year.

Anna Wintour, of course, is the editor-in-chief of Vogue and the lead chairperson of the Gala event since 1995 (excluding 1996 and 1998), oversees both the benefit committee and the guest list, giving her approval on the looks that we see on the red carpet. Due to the help of social media, many have gained interest in the Met Gala, its history and the looks that stem from it, taking to channels to discuss and dissect the outfits and designers. Tonight will be no different, with many turning their attention to Vogue and the coverage that will be happening.

Walking in the Garden of Time

Many are looking forward to the outfits that are going to be on display for tonight on the specialized green carpet, seeing how the guests dress to the theme and honor the Met. We know we're excited to see how this is going to come together!
